Hot Wheels, the makers of minature die-cast cars, have jumped on the Danica Patrick gravy train as one of her sponsors.

Not content with a simple logo emblazoned across her race suit, the firm is also creating a new model car, to be named after the Nascar star. The "Danicar" is Hot Wheels' first celeb-designed car – that's right, she's credited as a co-designer – and will be available as part of the basic 1:64 range rather than on limited edition.

Speaking about the deal, Patrick said, "my life is all about high velocity cars, and the only car company I could imagine being able to create my vision of the ultimate fantasy car is Hot Wheels."

"On the track, I am looking forward to speeding towards the finish line in true Hot Wheels style."

Danica's Nascar debut ended in disappointment after she was involved in a 12-car pile up at Daytona this weekend.

In addition to learning about types of hot wheels cars are variations of hot wheels cars. Variations are usually identified by differences in paint, different wheels, and other slight nuances. One may find a particular hot wheels car that has several different versions, with some being more rare because of the variations. For example, a flat black paint job versus a metal flake paint.

Hot wheels cars also have errors which are quite common. Errors can include missing wheels, missing parts such as an engine, mismatched wheels, different colored windshields, and even mismatched packaging. Collecting Hot Wheels Cars is a great hobby which can be enjoyed by young and old. In over 40 years, the price of Hot Wheels cars has remained virtually the same, with most cars costing around a dollar. Anyone can start collecting hot wheels right away!

Hot wheels generally fall into one of three categories: Vintage (Pre-1980) Hot Wheels, Modern (1980-1989) Hot Wheels, and Contemporary (1990-Now) Hot Wheels.

First, decide what kind of Hot Wheels collector you want to be. Do you prefer to keep Hot Wheels in pristine condition for show or investment? Or do you prefer opening the packages and enjoying them hands on? Opened package Hot Wheels cars are much easier to find and are generally much less expensive than sealed packages.

Millions of people from around the world have many fond memories of Hot Wheels cars, so an original Hot Wheels car from 1960's can sell for over $100. Rarer hot wheels cars can often sell for $300 or more. Check your garage, you might just find a rare hot wheels gem!

In recent years Hot Wheels released a special version of cars called Treasure Hunt. The first years of the treasure hunt series was 1995 with 12 special rare cars being released each year. In 1997, the treasure Hunt series was expanded with a special sub series called Super Treasure Hunt. Treasure hunt cars are quite rare with their production numbers limited to only a few thousand. Treasure Hunt series are recgoznizable by the green stripe along the right side, the treasure chest and the words t-hunt, treasure hunt, or Trea$ure Hunt$ (dollar signs in the name denote the Super Treasure Hunt cars)

You can collect Hot Wheels cars by year, model or series. The choice is up to you. 2008 will see Mattel Hot Wheels release over 160 cars including a special series of Mystery car!

Hot Wheel's Cars Dates

The date on the base of a Hot Wheels car is a design copyright date, not a manufacturing date.
(The date is the copyright date for the design of the base of the car, but there are only a handful of cases where that is not the same as the copyright date for the design of the entire car.) The date is generally the year before the car was first introduced, however it is sometimes dated the same year.

Mattel reuses and reissues many models of Hot Wheels cars, both as part of the regular line and as "commemorative" replicas. As a result, a car with the date 1969 on the base could have been made at any time between 1968 and the present. As of the 2006 First Editions, the date is no longer placed on the bottom of the car but rather on the inside where it isn't seen unless taken apart.

Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt Cars

Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt (also often called T-Hunt) is a line of Hot Wheels cars, introduced by in 1995 by Mattel. Treasure Hunt cars consist of 12 cars per year; with one Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt released each month. The original Treasure Hunt production run was to be 10,000 pieces worldwide. That number has since been increased due to the growing demand and popularity of Hot Wheels Cars as collector's items.

Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt Cars are identified by a green stripe on the lower right hand side of the package. The blister card will say "Treasure Hunt" or "T-Hunt" on a green bar with an illustration of a treasure chest. Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt cars are often decorated with limited edition flashy designs and special rubber wheels. They have a high secondary market price tag when they are first released which then subsides somewhat as the product is more widely available. Initially, a new Treasure Hunt release may fetch a much higher price when first released then as more are available, and more are stored and put away in collections, the Treasure Hunt cars increase in their demand and popularity. Data collected over the past twelve years actually indicates that price for Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt Cars is very positive. Prices from the Internet such as ebay and private collectors are generally much higher because regular collectors quote values that do not take into account shipping charges, risk, and inconvenience - all negative factors on the online market.

In 2007, Mattel introduced a two-tiered Treasure Hunt system. A regular Treasure Hunt Car - which features normal enamel paint schemes and normal wheels like other Hot Wheels cars. The production of these is rumored to be greater than Treasure Hunts of the past. The Super Treasure Hunt Hot Wheels Car is much rarer and, like Treasure Hunts of the past, features premium wheels, and Spectraflame paint schemes. All 12 Treasure Hunt cars are planned to be released in both regular and super versions.

Hot Wheels cars have been collected mostly by children, but in recent decades there has been an increase in the number of adult collectors. Mattel's estimate is that 41 million children grew up playing with the hot wheels cars, and that the average collector has over 1,550 cars. Children between the ages of 5 and 15 are estimated to have an average of 41 cars. Most believe the hot wheels car collecting craze started with the "Treasure Hunts" in 1995. Mike Strauss has been widely hailed as the father of Hot Wheels collecting; and he has organized two collectors' events each year in some form or other since 1986.

The first hot wheels collectors event by Mike Strauss was the Annual Hot Wheels Collectors Convention. These conventions occurred in various locations around the United States until approximately 2001, when the first Annual Hot Wheels Collectors Nationals was organized. Since then, these conventions are held each year in southern California in the fall. The Hot Wheels Collectors Nationals rotate among cities outside of California during the spring. Mike Strauss has also published the quarterly Hot Wheels Newsletter since 1986, and was one of the first people to unite Hot Wheels Cars collectors all over the world. To Hot Wheels, which is a Hot Wheels collector's guide for hot wheels cars history, pricing and descriptions.

It is used by almost every collector to learn more about the hot wheels cars collecting hobby - and of course - it helps to organize and value their hot wheels collection.

In 2001, Mattel noticed an impact on their sales from Hot Wheels Collectors and put together a website called HotWheelsCollectors.com. The Hot Wheels Collectors website is an online portal that unites collectors by offering limited edition cars, information about upcoming releases and events, as well as forums for buying, selling, and trading hot wheels cars.

Each year, they offer memberships to The Hot Wheels Redline Club, which gives members the opportunity to order limited edition cars, as well as offering members only access to areas of the site with information such as sneak previews of new cars.

There are thousands of web pages dedicated to Hot Wheels Cars Collecting and people are collecting everything from new releases, 'Hot Wheels Redlines' and everything in between. Hot Wheels Cars collecting is relatively inexpensive hobby with main cars costing about $.99 (US). Amazingly, Hot Wheels Cars prices have not changed in almost 40 years!

Once the cars are no longer available in retail stores, the cost then varies significantly. The cars then become collectible. A common car may sell for less than retail, while some of the less common hot wheels cars can sell hundreds or thousands of dollars. The highest price paid for a Hot Wheels Car was $72,000 (USD) in 2000.
